Sussex Architectural Photography

Photographing around Sussex makes me feel at home. I spent several years in Brighton, so travelling to photograph in and around the South Downs is a real treat. I'm fortunate to have a strong network of architectural and construction clients who trust me to capture their finished builds in their client's home.

Bright Green Homes

Bright Green Homes is a fantastic Brighton based 'design-manage-build' company who specialise in sustainable, eco-driven developments. They've been at the forefront of this industry for a while, and it's interesting to watch other construction companies now follow in their sustainable footsteps.

Two eco-friendly, mid-century kitchens - in one case study

------------------------------------

The photographs of these two kitchen developments compliment each other beautifully. In photographing their designs, it's clear to see they both draw inspiration from mid-century furniture and decor, but with a clean, modern twist. In all honesty, when designs look this good, it's hard not to take a good interior photograph.

Photographing Kitchen One

Our first set of kitchen photography is an eco-focused project in a beautiful Sussex countryside. The lighter wood, a classic mid-century trope, keeps the room bright and airy, while adding an array of colours that compliment the white cabinets, walls and lighting.

Photographing the island / breakfast bar made for an interesting challenge. It's a square countertop hides structure underneath; it tapers off, becoming thinner at one end. This creates a breakfast bar to sit at. To capture this on camera (photo above) we staggered the stools, to show that one stool 'sits' more underneath than its counterpart. The second solution was a second composition, shooting along the countertop to emphasise how the wooden panels taper away from the countertop.

Being an interiors photographer, you photograph a lot of kitchens and a lot of kitchen designs. It's genuinely a joy to see new designs like this island.

Utility Room Photography

Usually photographs of utility rooms aren't portfolio worthy, but this open plan design made it onto this page for two reasons:

1) It looks cool. It's a cool looking photo that shows how the designs continue from one room to the next. I like it.

2) It was the hardest technical interior photograph I've ever taken. It took every ounce of creativity and camera skill to capture this room and show the design in a flattering, dimensional way. For example, there are two square light patches on the back wall, under the paintings, they show the skylight windows installed above the dining table....

...those were not created by the sun.

Photographing Kitchen Two

The similarities in design inspiration can be seen in these photographs. Mid-century with lighter, multicoloured woods and white cabinets. It's a gorgeous look and both have been designed and installed brilliantly by the team at Bright Green Homes.

While the photographs of Kitchen One showed a modern twist (no handles, thick countertops) this kitchen has a more authentic approach to mid-century design.

The counter is a more usual thickness, there are stylishly designed handles on the kitchen cabinets.  The wood is a lightly more natural feel.  One design is not better than the other, just different. It's in photographing the details that these differences in the kitchens can really be seen.

How to style a kitchen for photography

This topic is an entire blog post in itself. For these kitchens, simplicity in styling was the key. We want the viewers gaze to draw attention to the design, the colour gradients in the wood and the shape of the handles. The props are to add life to the photograph, not detract from the design.

We removed everything and added items back one by one.
