The Development

This London commercial photography commission took place after the £16m regeneration of Angel Central by CBRE Global Investors. The development repurposes the carpark to create flagship retail units (UNIQLO) and a fitness studio (Frame), builds a bridge that links the upper floor of Angel Central and creates some much needed third space for people to relax. Other developments include an oval kiosk, fully glazed and the well known Angel Wings that mark the Centre.

A Commercial Photoshoot | London

Commercial Photography in London always brings up a plethora of diverse problems to solve with a range of skillsets. With an intensive brief that covered a two day span, this photoshoot became very involved, very quickly. Photographing Angel Central, London was a blend of architectural photography, commercial photography, twilight photography and even a little landscape garden photography. All these disciplines come together to create a set of advertising photographs that can be used by the architects, developers, retail units and the PR companies for B2B and B2C marketing.

Angel Central Photographs at Night

Angel Central shopping Centre comes to life at night. Photographing this North London development took planning to time each shot to be taken in the magical twilight window that creates such a dreamy effect. One challenge involved photographing around the bustling shoppers and late night diners to try to get a clean image (required by the brief).

Good Light & Good Lighting

Good lighting makes a commercial photographers life a lot easier. Combine it with good light and (as my dad often says) you're cooking with fire. Haskoll , the architects of this scheme  have made the escalator - an incredibly dull object - into an exciting, statement piece. Seen from outside the shopping centre from both the Liverpool Road entrance, and the Upper Street entrance this lighting scheme harnesses attention and draws people in. An excellent piece of design.

The Wings

The wings are a controversial sculpture in Angel. Designed in 2003 by the super talented  artist Wolfgang Buttress (check out The Hive or Liminal to be blown away) , the wings have been a talking point for nearly two decades. The neigh sayers claim they're an eyesore while local resident Olivia Clark, aged 10, petitioned Angel & Islington Borough Council to keep the wings as part of the new construction. Needless to say, she won and not an insignificant sum of money and resources were used to raise them up and ingratiate them into the newly designed development. Photographing the angel wings creates a focus for nearly every images that they're in. The wings catch the light beautifully and on a sunny day give wonderful contrast against a blue sky. My only complaint is having a pop on a wider lens for some shots - they are enormous!

Photographing Design | Small Details

Usually photographs of bins and benches wouldn't make it to the website. It's a detail shot that's included on an advertising photography brief. They'll get used as concept ideas, become a footnote in a B2B marketing brochure and maybe get a blog post created from them. Safe to say, not the hero shots a London commercial photographer would put on their website.

...but I really like these bins!

They're bizarrely appealing. They could have been a boring, cheap bin to keep costs down, but no, an effort was made. An extra few quid signed off the budget and to folks like me, we really notice these touches.

Signage

Signage is as important an element of design as any. Easy to underestimate and rarely simple to achieve, it's a common occurrence to see this element go wrong on new developments. Thankfully the Angel Central signage is sleek and effective. Though they may not make the prettiest photographs, it's important to capture these when they're done well.
